Philippine Tech Industry Status

The Philippine tech sector is advancing, but progress stems primarily from international companies establishing local operations rather than from homegrown talent development. Building a quality team presents distinct challenges beyond simply assembling personnel.

Rising Compensation

Tech sector salaries have increased substantially over recent years, reflecting higher skill requirements. International companies view the Philippines as cost-effective compared to Singapore and Hong Kong, combined with English proficiency advantages. However, this economic advantage may diminish as local salaries rise and skill gaps narrow.

The "Impostor" Problem

Some professionals advance their careers by acquiring tool-specific knowledge without developing fundamental technical foundations. This creates a chain reaction in the job market where individuals jump positions for higher pay based on superficial experience that doesn't transfer meaningfully. Strong fundamentals and independent problem-solving ability matter more than resume credentials.

Education System Gaps

The local education system hasn't adequately prepared graduates for industry practices. Many developers lack exposure to contemporary technologies and struggle with modern learning paces. As one small effort, I started a video tutorial series about programming with Svelte aimed at curious beginners. I suggest pairing less-experienced developers with strong leadership that establishes high performance standards.

Conclusion

Diversity within teams, including varied skill levels, produces positive outcomes. Inexperienced members sometimes contribute fresh perspectives the industry needs.
